Just looking for a grave location? Try our free online grave locator first — it searches the digitized interment index instantly and shows the section, lot, and grave at no charge. The paid research service below is for full records, plot cards, arranging-party details, and hand searches of the original ledgers.
Records available: Interment date, section and lot location, and arranging party name. For burials prior to 1900, additional documentation may be available upon request.
How to request records
Please complete the form below with as much information as you have. As soon as you submit, you can pay the research fee securely online — and we email you the same payment link as well. The moment your payment is received we begin the search. Research requests are typically completed within 10 business days, though more complex inquiries may take longer.
Research fees
A $25 research fee applies to each genealogy request. This fee covers the time our staff spends searching our ledgers and records, and is non-refundable — including in the event we are unable to locate information matching your inquiry. After submitting the form, you can pay securely online using the button shown on screen (we also email you the link). If you would rather pay by phone, call our office at 908.352.7940. Families are welcome to visit the cemetery in person during office hours to view lot locations — no appointment is necessary, though calling ahead is appreciated.
Visiting in person
The grounds are open to visitors daily from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm. Our office can provide section and lot information so you can locate specific graves. For assistance on-site, please visit during office hours Monday–Friday 8:30–4:00 or Saturday 9:00–12:00.
A historic research destination
Evergreen Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places — a 115-acre rural garden cemetery founded in 1853 whose nearly 130,000 gravesites reflect the many communities of the region, from Newark's early Jewish congregations to Ukrainian, Chinese, and Roma families. Researchers interested in the cemetery's past may enjoy our history and the notable burials on our grounds, including author Stephen Crane and Hardy Boys creator Edward Stratemeyer.
